Yankees manager Joe Girardi gets ejected, covers home plate in dirt

Joe Girardi pulled a Billy Martin on Saturday.

No, not by getting fired and immediately rehired. But an ejection led to a classic blow up from the Yankees’ skipper.

After some jawing back and forth with the home plate umpire on balls and strikes in the fifth inning of Sunday’s Rays-Yankees matchup, Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild got ejected.

Girardi followed soon after, and got his money’s worth.

It’s funny. When Harper hit the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, stardom seemed inevitable. Few prep ballplayers have attracted as much hype, from David Clyde to Ken Griffey Jr. to Alex Rodriguez. But Harper’s career has been mixed. Aside from his 2015 MVP season, he’s dealt with injuries and provided solid but unspectacular play. He could be the next Reggie Jackson. Or he could be the next Fred Lynn. It’s still too soon to tell.

Meanwhile, Trout has rarely operated at less than peak Basketball Jerseys form, averaging 9.4 WAR per 650 plate appearances for his career. Baseball-Reference.com rates 8 WAR as an MVP-caliber season. Not surprisingly, Trout has finished first or second in MVP voting every season but 2011. He’ll turn 26 in August and is already better sabermetrically than several Hall of Famers. Barring catastrophe, his enshrinement is only a matter of time.

It’s been the same song and dance the past few seasons for the Mets

A pioneering Negro League owner, Greenlee’s possibly gotten short shrift because he accummulated some of his fortune through bootlegging and running illegal lotteries in Pittsburgh in the 1920s and ’30s. But the 2006 committee enshrined Alex Pompez, who once fled the country and later turned state’s evidence to beat a murder rap. A number of other Negro League executives made money through illicit means as well. Meanwhile, Greenlee built the first black-owned ballpark in black baseball. He also had a hand in scouting Jackie Robinson for the majors.

Donaldson ranks as one of the best black pitchers of the 1910s, pitching for J.L. Wilkinson’s integrated All Nations barnstorming team. The challenge for Donaldson? He starred before the founding of the Negro Leagues, overlooked in a similar way to white players such as Jim Creighton from before the founding of the first major league in 1871.

It’s been the same song and dance the past few seasons for the Mets: Their highly talented pitchers can’t stay on the mound; manager Terry Collins tries to rally the troops; everyone says, Don’t panic until it’s time to panic. Mets fans are probably sick of the cycle. Just. Win.

Yeah, it’s still early. Things could go belly-up for the Yankees in a hurry, and the Mets could win 15 straight and challenge Washington in the NL East. That’s baseball, Suzyn.

But the city was there for the taking last year, and the Mets failed to capitalize.

Both viewpoints were valid, but something more was at stake for the Mets than just winning a championship: bragging rights. Fans walking onto a subway on Monday morning and smacking off every Yankee cap Basketball Jerseys they saw. Shaking up the can of soda and watching it spray big brother in the Buy Cheap Jerseys face when he opened it.
